The coastline of the Outer Hebrides is around 2,500km in length and forms the predominant landscape feature of the islands. The coastal land, sea lochs and inshore waters of the Western Isles are rich in natural resources, wildlife, and cultural and archaeological heritage. Most of the population of the islands live on the coast or nearby and many derive an income from it and the surrounding inshore waters. CoastHebrides, the short name for the Outer Hebrides Coastal Marine Partnership, is the local coastal partnership for our islands. The partnership aims to enable people with an interest in economic development, tourism and recreation, the environment, erosion and flooding, archaeology, such as businesses, community organisations, individuals, and statutory agencies, to share information, plan, and help to implement the sustainable management of the Outer Hebrides coastal zone. The aim of the Outer Hebrides Coastal Marine Partnership is: 
To promote a sustainable and strategic approach to the planning, management, use and development of the Outer Hebrides coastal zone, that will ensure that its inherent, natural, cultural and economic assets are maintained and enhanced for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.

In order to deliver the aim of the partnership the following objectives need to be achieved:
  • Establish the required organisational framework and support for the development of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in the Outer Hebrides.
  • Ensure that all stakeholders, including the general public, are well informed about the issues facing the coastal zone and appreciate the benefits.
  • Seek the involvement of all interested parties, from national to local, in the ICZM process in the Outer Hebrides.
  • Encourage all sectors and organizations involved with the coastal zone to adopt the principles in the planning and management of their activities.
  • Explore the benefits of an integrated spatial approach to the planning and management of the coastal zone.
  • Seek to influence the development and delivery of new and existing coastal zone related legislation for the benefit of the Outer Hebrides
  • Develop and promote a sound knowledge base of the Outer Hebrides coastal zone, promote access to it and foster interaction between science and policy.
  • Monitor, review and seek to influence the development and implementation of policies on the coastal zone.
