CoastAdapt in Iceland Print E-mail
Monday, 23 August 2010 14:14
CoastAdapt is nearing completion of the first phase of the project which is designed to gather information about knowledge and perceptions of present and future impacts of changing climates from the pilot study sites situated in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, Hammerfest Municipality in northern Norway, Tralee Bay to the west of Ireland, and southern Iceland.

This transnational project, supported by the Northern Periphery Programme, involves local coastal communities in a bottom-up approach to the development of adaptive response and preparedness to the impacts of climate change.

The last in the first series of workshops under Phase 1, and discussions with Icelandic agencies such as the Maritime Administration and Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, will take place during the end of August. The aim will be for project partners to learn from experience gained in relation to natural hazards presented by volcanic activity and flooding, and how this experience can be used by coastal communities in the other study sites in terms of adapting to severe weather events and emergency planning.

Offshore Wind Energy SEA & Marine Planning Public Meetings

Friday 13th August 2010 at the Bayhead Bridge Centre, Stornoway
There will be 2 events: one from 2pm to 4pm, and one from 6pm to 8pm

All members of the public are invited to come along and share their views on Scotland’s draft plan for offshore wind. The draft plan is open for public consultation until 27 September 2010, and can be viewed on the Scottish Government’s website.  Marine Scotland officials will be on hand to provide more information about the plan and other projects relating to offshore wind, wave and tidal energy, and to hear your comments.

The events will discuss the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Draft Plan for Offshore Wind in Scottish Territorial Waters.  This SEA provides a framework for progressing the development of offshore wind energy out to 12 NM, and along with the draft plan presents the Government’s vision for offshore wind development up to 2020 and beyond.  The draft development plan has identified 10 sites as the short term option (2010-2020) and an additional 25 areas as medium term options (beyond 2020) for developing offshore wind.
